Artist's Description
On January 10, 1901, the world changed with the discovery of an enormous oil field in East Texas. The Spindletop well gushed for nine days, creating a lake of petroleum that caught fire and exploded hundreds of feet into the air. Ignoring this warning, prospectors poured into the area, creating an Oil Rush that dwarfed the Gold Rush of California. Suddenly petroleum was cheap, and internal combustion engines were everywhere.

Texas born and raised, daughter of informally trained artists and craftspeople, I draw inspiration from folk traditions, especially from the arts of the Mexican Dias de los Muertos, the European Danse Macabre, the Haitian Vodou banner, and the Colonial American needleworker. The paintings and papercuts of my DANZA MACABRA dramatize the reality of death as a part of life that we must embrace if we are to live with our whole hearts. They propose an attitude of radical acceptance--with gusto. Each piece centers on a dance, modern or traditional. Some are papercuts; most are paintings in acrylic on canvas.
