El Vals de la Viuda 1: Eres tu la Muertita, soy yo la Catrina (You are the beloved dead, I am la Catrina)--
La Calavera Catrina, created by Jose Guadalupe Posada in 1813, has become an important part of celebrations of Los Dias de los Muertos, the Days of the Dead. Here she carries cempasuchil, the flowers of the dead, and wears a mourner's veil. The banners of papel picado depict doves for love, a butterfly for the spirit, and cactus for endurance.

Texas born and raised, daughter of informally trained artists and craftspeople, I draw inspiration from folk traditions, especially from the arts of the Mexican Dias de los Muertos, the European Danse Macabre, the Haitian Vodou banner, and the Colonial American needleworker. The paintings and papercuts of my DANZA MACABRA dramatize the reality of death as a part of life that we must embrace if we are to live with our whole hearts. They propose an attitude of radical acceptance--with gusto. Each piece centers on a dance, modern or traditional. Some are papercuts; most are paintings in acrylic on canvas.
