The hands are those of 98-year-old artist Frances Arredondo and her long-time friend and caregiver Gloria Meadows. The painting is based on a photo taken by Gloria (with her left hand) while they talked about death. Frances died two weeks later.
Texas born and raised, daughter of informally trained artists and craftspeople, I draw inspiration from folk traditions, especially from the arts of the Mexican Dias de los Muertos, the European Danse Macabre, the Haitian Vodou banner, and the Colonial American needleworker. The paintings and papercuts of my DANZA MACABRA dramatize the reality of death as a part of life that we must embrace if we are to live with our whole hearts. They propose an attitude of radical acceptance--with gusto. Each piece centers on a dance, modern or traditional. Some are papercuts; most are paintings in acrylic on canvas.
