Tibetan monks perform the Durdak Cham or Dur-dak Gar-cham to invoke the liberating and balancing effects of an awareness of the ephemeral nature of all things.
This piece is done entirely in cut paper, without any paint or other color touches.

Ruth Hooper

Texas born and raised, daughter of informally trained artists and craftspeople, I draw inspiration from folk traditions, especially from the arts of the Mexican Dias de los Muertos, the European Danse Macabre, the Haitian Vodou banner, and the Colonial American needleworker. The paintings and papercuts of my DANZA MACABRA dramatize the reality of death as a part of life that we must embrace if we are to live with our whole hearts. They propose an attitude of radical acceptance--with gusto. Each piece centers on a dance, modern or traditional. Some are papercuts; most are paintings in acrylic on canvas.
