About Ruth Hooper
Texas born and raised, daughter of informally trained artists and craftspeople, I draw inspiration from folk traditions, especially from the arts of the Mexican Dias de los Muertos, the European Danse Macabre, the Haitian Vodou banner, and the Colonial American needleworker.
The paintings and papercuts of my DANZA MACABRA dramatize the reality of death as a part of life that we must embrace if we are to live with our whole hearts. They propose an attitude of radical acceptance--with gusto. Each piece centers on a dance, modern or traditional. Some are papercuts; most are paintings in acrylic on canvas.
The paintings and beadworks of the MAGIC CATS hint at the mysteries of animism, in which all nature is known to be imbued with spirit. Some of these pieces incorporate sequins, mardi gras beads, and metallic leaf; others are paintings in gouache.
I offer these works as an homage to the artists of cultures that express attunement to the cycles of life and to our place in the natural world. I offer these works with the hope that with inspiration from those artists, ancient and modern, the dominant culture may find its way to more sustainable ways of living.
Dedicated to my aunt, Frances Arredondo, artist and mentor.
